Guiding Principles and Ethical Standards

SERC counts with an Ethics of Research Policy which guides our involvement in research projects. We seek ethics certification for SERC projects from a research ethics board. Researchers who recruit and interview people for research purposes are obligated to follow certain ethical principles:

  • Respect for persons
  • Avoid harm
  • Respect for justice
  • Respect for free and informed consent
  • Respect for privacy and confidentiality
  • Maximize benefits

SERC expect that research projects that seek to involve SERC’s program participants demonstrate adherence to these ethical principles and our policies, and ideally have received ethics certification from a research ethics board.

At SERC, evaluation projects may not have a certificate from a research ethics board. However, all SERC’s employees and volunteers involved in evaluation projects follow the same high ethical standards when involved in evaluation activities.
