What we found out
How we see ourselves
(Ethno-Racial Youth Self-Identification)
- Many of us considered ourselves as belonging first to the ethno-cultural background of our parents, but also to Canadian culture.
- Due to the different roles and expectations that come from these two groups, ERM youth feel "stuck in the middle" or "50/50".
- When forming our identities ERM youth use multiple ethno-cultural sources (i.e., own family ethno-cultural group, and other cultures, including "Canadian" culture).
- We may identify more with "Canadian" or "ethnic" groups depending on the situation (when applying for jobs, when meeting new people).
