2STLGBQIA+  is an acronym that stands for Two-Spirit, Transgender, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and Aromantic. The plus sign is meant to include any identities that have not been captured by the other letters, and allows space for people to define themselves along the spectrum of sexualities and identities. This acronym changes over time, and many individuals and organizations use different variations. SERC uses the acronym 2STLGBQIA+ in an effort to be as inclusive as possible and acknowledge the diversity of sexualities and identities.

2STLGBQIA+ individuals may self-identify, and/or use terms in a variety of way. Identities are personal, and can be fluid and change over the course of a lifetime.  Identities are about feelings, or a sense of self, and not about behaviours. The way that a person expresses themselves may not necessarily reflect their identity. For example, it is important not to assume someone’s gender based on appearance or behaviour. Instead, allow opportunities for people to self-identify by actively listening for cues, or by asking.

2STLGBQIA+ folks experience homophobia, biphobia, lesbophobia, and transphobia. These phobias are constellations of negative attitudes toward and feelings about 2STLGBQIA+ people or those perceived to be. 2STLGBQIA+ folks may also experience heterosexism and cissexism. Heterosexism is the system of oppression that assumes (and therefore acts on this assumption), that everyone is straight and therefore 2STLGBQIA+ folks, identities, and experiences do not and should not exist. Cissexism is a system of oppression that assumes (and therefore acts on this assumption) that everyone is cisgender (not trans*) and therefore trans* folks, identities, and experiences do not and should not exist.

Heterosexual and cisgender people hold power and privilege, and do not experience discrimination in the form of heterosexism and cissexism, and therefore are not included in the 2STLGBQIA+ acronym. It is about creating space for individuals and communities who have experienced oppression, discrimination, and marginalization based on their identities and experiences.

Experiencing and navigating systems of oppression can be difficult. SERC is pleased to offer affirming and supportive programming for 2STLGBQIA+  individuals, families, and friends in Western Manitoba. SERC also offers service provider training for professionals looking to increase their awareness and build capacity around creating safer spaces for 2STLGBQIA+ individuals.

Note: You may have noticed that we updated the acronym from 2STLGBQ+ to 2STLGBQIA+. Over the last year (2024), we’ve been discussing our acronym use at SERC. During this time, we created a working group, conducted a staff survey that was reviewed by our leadership team, spoke to local community members, and examined what our partner agencies were doing nationally. After compiling these findings, the leadership team and the staff working group chose to move forward with changing the acronym
