What we found out
ERMY needs and wants
- Approaches to sexuality education with ERM Youth:
o We feel that a peer education approach (ERMY teaching ERMY) is a better way to deal with sexuality.
o Having educators of similar ethno-racial background to us would make education more meaningful.
o Community-based education (places other than school) would provide relevant information and a comfortable environment to deal with sexuality issues.
o Greater outreach is needed through ERM specific media and cultural events
- We believe that our parents or other adult family members and the community in general should also talk about sexuality.
- School-based sexuality education:
o We would like to include discussion and materials that reflect ERM youth’s real life issues, including our struggles in fitting in the Canadian context (culture).
o We don’t just want information on regular health topics (e.g., reproductive system or sexually transmitted infections).
o We want information on social issues that contribute to youth sexuality and sexual behaviours and practices, including relationships and dating.
