A group of ethno racial minority youth (youth research team) got together to talk about what it is like to grow up in Winnipeg.
We looked at research that had been done on ERM youth in Canada and America. As a result we discovered that not much was written on the realities of ERM youth in Canada.
So we set out to ask our peers questions like: What are the experiences of ethno-racial minority (ERM) youth as related to sexuality in Winnipeg, the Canadian context and a new society?
Our group of ERM youth researchers came up with a set of questions to ask our fellow ERMY friends and acquaintances.
We talked to ERM youth individually and also within groups.
The guys talked with the guys and the girls talked with the girls
o Individual interviews (Total of 19; 10 males and 9 females)
o Gender-specific focus groups (Total of 4 ; 11 males and 5 females)
At the end we invited all participants back again and talked more on the factors that affect our sexuality, such as culture shock, language barriers, pressure to assimilate, conflict with parents, isolation, racism and discrimination.
