It’s SERC’s 85th Anniversary!
In 1934, the Winnipeg Birth Control Society was founded. Over time, the organization grew and evolved to take on many identities, including the Family Planning Association of Winnipeg (1952), Planned Parenthood Manitoba (1976) and today as Sexuality Education Resource Centre Manitoba (since 1997).
We invite you to join us on Thursday, September 19th, 2019 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery as we celebrate our past and launch into the future! Enjoy appetizers and beverages during the reception, while exploring an interactive timeline display of our history, generously donated by Lumoplay. Be the first to view SERC’s new awareness campaign videos!
Engage in a thoughtful and compelling keynote presentation by Farrah Khan, an internationally renowned speaker and activist in the realm of gender-based violence, prevention and consent.

Keynote Speaker: Farrah Khan
Farrah Khan has spent two decades raising awareness about the intersections of gender-based violence and equity through education, policy, art creation and advocacy. She is the founder of Possibility Seeds Consulting, member of the Government of Canada’s Federal Strategy Against Gender-based Violence Advisory Council and currently the manager of Consent Comes First at Ryerson University. Farrah is co-founder of innovative community projects including Use The Right Words: Media Reporting on Sexual Violence and host of the upcoming podcast Pleasure Principle. She regularly contributes to national media with her expertise in addressing gender based violence. Farrah is the recipient of the numerous awards including the Toronto Community Foundation’s Vital People Award. In 2018 Farrah was appointed to the Gender Equality Advisory Council for the G7 Summit. At the Summit, Farrah addressed an audience of world leaders insisting that any discussion about a thriving, sustainable and peaceful world is not possible without taking concrete action on gender equity.
Keynote Presentation: Cultivating Brave Spaces
From campuses, to workplaces, to our homes, there is an unprecedented dialogue in North America about sexual violence. It’s time to explore how and what we have been taught about relationships, sex and justice. How do we flirt, handle rejection, or say yes to ourselves? What do we do when we have a crush, learn a friend has caused harm, or things get weird in a relationship and maybe feel unsafe? Drawing from two decades of experience in addressing sexual violence as an educator, counsellor and policy advisor, Farrah Khan shares tangible ways to actively intervene to prevent sexual violence. Beyond prevention, Farrah shares strategies to respond effectively to disclosures of sexual violence and work with those who have caused harm. Join her to envision possibilities for cultivating gender justice in our communities and institutions.
