To continue celebrating SERC’s 90th anniversary, we are hosting a fundraiser on Friday, February 7. Join us for A Sparkling Winter Night: SERC’s 90th Anniversary Social, a winter wonderland themed Manitoba-style social featuring all the classic social elements— music, entertainment, sandwiches, dancing, kielbasa, cash bar, and more! This social will unite the many communities we serve to commemorate 90 years of sexuality education.
The evening will be hosted by Mike Green and feature a drag story time suitable for all ages with local drag king and queen Randy River and Deb from Winnipeg. There will also be an all-ages dance party with DJ Mama Cutsworth. As the night progresses, we will enjoy more music from the local Indigenous DJ collective, Nimi’idiwin, and more drag performances from Randy and Deb!
Mama Cutsworth has been one of Winnipeg’s most-loved and respected DJs for 20 years, so her sets span a wide variety of genres and eras of music. You can expect to hear soul, indie, disco, reggae, rock, perhaps even a polka. Since 2015, she has been creating a joyful, multi-generational experience known as Mama Cutsworth’s Family Dance Party. This event has grown in popularity and has gone to the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Assiniboine Park Zoo, The Forks, Festival du Voyageur, various Pride celebrations, and more.
Randy River is a drag king from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and is a registered member of Couchiching First Nation in Treaty 3 territory. Randy satirically shines a light on toxic masculinity in the late 90s and early 2000s, and his favourite pastimes include (but are not limited to) wheeling around town on his Heely’s, listening to nü metal, and drinking Monster energy drinks for breakfast. He’s the uncle we all love to hate!
Deb is…from Winnipeg! This bearded beauty is ready to dazzle you with her expressive outfits, dramatic performances, and bubbly personality. Fuelled by her transgender excellence and love of drag, Deb spreads queer joy to all by adapting her drag to cater to different audiences, events, and age groups – all while remaining authentic to herself.
Nimi’idiwin: We Dance Together, an Indigenous DJ collective building safe spaces for Indigenous electronic music in Treaty 1. Featuring DJs Cadence (Waywayseecappo), The Kaptain (Long Plain), and Justin Bear (Peguis & Red River Metis).
We will serve all the classic social snacks, including sandwiches, cold cuts, chips, and veggie trays. We will also serve vegan and halal options. Cash bar.
The social will be held at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain (CCFM), at 340 Provencher Boulevard, in the Jean-Paul Aubrey Room. There is a free parking lot on site, as well as street parking nearby.
There will be a 50/50 draw and a silent auction at the event. Some silent auction prizes include a 9th-generation iPad courtesy of Manitoba Blue Cross, laser tag passes courtesy of Uptown Alley, and passes to Festival du Voyageur! More prizes will be announced as they are confirmed.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Physical tickets can be collected after purchase at SERC’s Winnipeg office (167 Sherbrook Street, 2nd floor) in January 2025 or at the event’s doors. Free tickets for children under 12.
Accessibility and inclusion are key to SERC’s values, so we want to bring together the many diverse communities that we serve. While we all come from different backgrounds and experiences, we’re all here in Manitoba, so let’s come together for a fun evening, and help each other get through another cold Manitoba winter. Join us for A Sparkling Winter Night and celebrate 90 years of sexual health education!
